In 1969, Mrs. Liza James Howard become the
first African-American to attend and graduate from The
University of West Alabama. In honor of Mrs. Howard,
several alumni chartered the minority chapter of UWA's National
Alumni Association in her name. This chapter
has adopted the project of raising funds to build a monument to
commemorate Mrs. Howard. The sidewalk and foundation have
already been laid in the courtyard by Bibb Graves Hall and the
monument structure will be built as funds are raised.
There will be a brick walkway surrounding the monument that will
become a tribute to the many friends, groups and classmates who
make UWA great. You may purchase an engraved brick paver
that will become a part of that walkway. With your
purchase, you will help make this permanent structure a part of
the campus for generations. You may select engraving to
honor a friend, relative, classmate, teacher or group. You
may have up to three lines with 13 characters on each line.
Pavers are $75 each and may be purchased through the UWA Alumni
Office at 205.652.3586 or
online. If you would
like to be involved with the Liza Howard Alumni Chapter, you may
contact President Verlanda Tate ('89) at 205.933.5030 or
